It&...Just catching up after our little foray away!<br /><br />It's interesting that we assume that these places must have been bleak to inhabit, but we are judging them from the climate we currently 'enjoy' and the ground conditions now underfoot. When these places were first established the climate was considerably warmer and drier, and so the land around was in far better condition - it would have been farmed with root crops and barley and a few farm animals.<br /><br />Imagine the places with a Southern British climate, with small fields and the place looks entirely different.<br /><br />Global warming?
